The choice of site was made on account of its proximity to the railway (by which troops could be transported anywhere in Ireland), excellent access to the sea / Dublin Port via the North Circular Road, and the training facilities for men and war horses. Stationed at the McKee Barracks on the city's western side, the U.S. Army troops numbered as many as 3,000 during the Cold War, from 1947 to 1991. A portion of this field was destroyed in the Allied bombing in March, 1945, and during the Four Day Battle in April, 1945 when elements of the 10th Armored Division occupied Crailsheim.
